If your bathroom exhaust fan isn’t working as well as it should, you may need a new motor. A poorly functioning fan can leave your home with a bad smell, and it also makes it harder for the ventilation system to remove moisture that can cause mold or mildew. Getting a new bath exhaust fan motor is easy if you have the right tools.
You’ll need an oscillating saw, a utility knife, mask/respirator, goggles and gloves, especially if you have to work in an attic or crawl space to get to the exhaust fan. Make sure the power is turned OFF before beginning any work. Remove the ceiling vent cover and clean out any dust or dirt that has built up in the housing and on the fan blades or blower wheel. If you hear knocking or rattling, this indicates that the fan is out of balance or that the blower wheel is loose and needs to be tightened.
Then remove the motor plate from the housing (Photo 1). You may need to pry or push hard, depending on the design of the cover. Some covers are held on by screws, while others can be removed by simply pulling up.
If you’re replacing a motor, it’s important to buy the exact model number of your old one so that you order the correct replacement. If you don’t know the number, you can find it by removing the grille and vacuuming away the dust to read a label or stamp on the back of the housing.
